Back to the Hair!

With the recent release of Grimes’ new video “Kill V. Maim” I have been on this nostalgic 80s and 90s pop culture kick. From video games, animation and comic books, the 80s were huge for those in consumption of fantastical visual storytelling. So, here is a little trip down memory lane for those who grew up with Saturday morning cartoons of the superhero or entertainment genre.

Jem & The Holograms

This totally girl-boss show, Jem originally aired from approximately 1985-1988, before I was born. So, I’ve never heard of it… until the recent semi-accurate 2015 movie adaptation, Jem & the Holograms came out. Jem’s transformation from average teen girl to Internet sensation, involves some Gaga-esque eye makeup and bubblegum pink hair. Very 80s pop glamour. Think Ke$ha circa 2012, or model, Audrey Kitching and her signature cotton candy locks.

Scooby Doo

Those medaling kids and that rascal of a dog, were on the air for a LONG time. Originally, Scooby Doo, Where Are You? aired in 1969 till the late 80s. They are iconic costumes at ComicCons around the world. The ladies of the mystery gang, Velma and Daphne, are quite the opposite of each other, but emit their character’s personality through style and hair. Daphne is the flirty ginger girl-next-door with her classic loose waves and purple headband. While Velma is the studious sleuth with her stiff brunette bob and geek-chic Buddy Holly glasses.

 And Zooey Deschanel’s nerdy-casual New Girl look.

Josie & the Pussycats

This all girl rock band, debuted from the Archie Comics franchise and became a hit Saturday morning animated show in the late 1970s early 80s. The girls: Josie, Melody and Valerie would rock through their adolescent lives with a similar beat to the world of Archie. Josie is another iconic feisty redhead, who would later be adapted by Rachael Leigh Cook in the 2001 flick Josie & the Pussycats.

The Jetsons

Back in the early 60s, animators and storytellers thought we would be living the American Dream full of Star Trek teleportation (or apparition?) and space ship commutes. We lived vicariously through The Jetsons, which ran from early 1960s to the early 90s. George Jetson’s daughter, Judy has been a trendsetter for celebrities, stylists and designers, with her platinum blonde hair and futuristic pink mini dresses and leggings. There’s even a Jetson themed hair salon in Cambridge, Massachusetts. To get the Judy look involves a lot of teasing to make your hair stand tall and proud in a ponytail! Take note of our modern day muses:
